Hello applicant. You are about to apply for a permit to keep chickens. If your application is approved, you will receive by email, a permit for keeping chickens. Residents are NOT allowed to keep chickens until this permit has been issued.

Here are a few pointers to help you along the way. For questions, please refer to Baraboo City Code 29.13 available on the City's website at City of Baraboo.

You will have to know a few things before you can complete your application. You will not be able to save an incomplete application so have these items ready before you start:
1. The zoning district for your property. You can find it on the City’s website at City of Baraboo then type “zoning map” in the search box.

2. Your tax parcel number. You can find it on your latest tax bill, or the County’s website at County's website.

3. Photo of your chicken coop, or a sketch or drawing.

4. Certain measurements: lot size width, coop length and width, distance of coop to lot lines in feet, distance of coop to applicant’s house.

5. Name, address and parcel number of neighboring property owners for parcels immediately touching your parcel. You can locate this information at County's website.

6.IF you are the tenant of a property and are requesting a chicken permit, you MUST attach a copy of a letter from the property owner giving permission for chickens to be kept at this address.  The letter must include the applicant name and property address.  

7.For schools, a signed letter from the School Board acknowledging the approval of keeping chickens at the school for educational purposes. A school application will be denied if this letter is not attached.

If you have to quit before finishing you have the ability to print the incomplete application for later reference.

Payment of $25 for a new application or $10 for a renewal is required at the end of the process. Payment options include: online, US mail, or in person. More details will be provided at the completion of the application.

After completing application and payment, please allow 30 days for processing.
